Love in my country is kind of a taboo, much like homosexuality, asking someone about how much they make, or, well, you know where I’m going, independent women (what a monstrosity!).Love can take you to prison, literally (no, I’m not making some kind of weird metaphor, I’m talking about reality). In my country, holding hands in public is, sometimes, still an excuse for a trip to the police station, thanks to our extremely zealous Moroccan cops.In my country, two men in love are sinners, and can be imprisoned up to three years for simply being who they are. Still, that is a little better than getting beaten to death in the streets by an angry mob of hateful homophobes. “What about two women in love?” you might ask. Well, weirdly enough, people are more, how can say that? accepting of it, because, even the most homophobic Moroccan man can find it in his heart (obviously, this is irony) to fantasize about gay women. Ah, double standards, always flourishing in our beautiful country! |
